International Master Florist Education (IMF)
The highest level within International Floral Design
The International Master Florist Education (IMF) is the highest-level professional floral design program offered by the Boerma Instituut and ranks among the most advanced floral education programmes in the world.
This prestigious programme has been specially developed for experienced florists who wish to further refine their technical skills, design knowledge, creativity, and personal artistic vision.
Throughout two intensive modules, you will learn to create highly complex floral designs, master innovative techniques, and develop a stronger artistic identity.
The program is taught by a team of internationally award-winning Master Florists and leads to the exclusive International Master Florist Diploma (IMF), an internationally respected qualification within the professional floral industry.
The IMF Diploma is certified according to the quality standards established by Gregor Lersch and represents a level of craftsmanship that is recognised worldwide.
The Next Step After DFD and ADFD
While the Professional Dutch Floral Design Course (DFD) focuses on building a solid foundation and the Advanced Dutch Floral Design Course (ADFD) further develops technical expertise and creativity, the International Master Florist Education represents the very highest level within the Boerma Institute’s educational programm.
During this program, the focus is on:
- Strengthening creative and conceptual thinking through internal design logic.
- Achieving technical excellence, where craftsmanship and manual skills are the highest priority. You will learn to create strong, durable floral designs that demonstrate exceptional workmanship.
- Mastering innovative design techniques. The floral industry is constantly evolving, and international Master Florists continually explore new ways of creating.
- Working at an international master level. You will be taught by internationally award-winning floral artists who will personally coach and guide you to elevate your skills.
- Flower placement based on the Golden Ratio. There is nothing more important than placing the right flower in exactly the right position.
- Creating floral designs with a strong personal identity. You will learn the design principles that ensure your work communicates clearly and powerfully.
- Developing your own design philosophy. By learning from several internationally renowned designers, you will discover how to integrate different influences into your own distinctive style.
The program challenges you to look beyond traditional floral design and teaches you to create work that is both technically outstanding and artistically distinctive.
What makes the IMF program unique?
There are many aspects that make the International Master Florist Education unique.
The way the program is taught
It is an exceptionally intensive program that combines in-depth theory with hands-on practical experience.
Each day has a different theme and is designed to help you learn as much as possible about that subject.
Every morning begins with a theory lesson, during which several floral arrangements are demonstrated, giving you a wide range of practical examples and design possibilities.
Afterwards, it is time for practical work, where you have ample time to create your own designs. At the beginning of the program you will have more time, but as the course progresses you will naturally become faster and more efficient.
At the end of each day there is always a group review session. Every student’s work is discussed individually in the presence of the entire class. You will hear what works well and what can be improved.
The teachers also make this program unique
You will be guided by a team of award-winning international florists.
You will be taught by World Champion Bart Hassam, Mark Pampling (winner of the Asia Cup, Australia Cup, and World Flower Art Contest), Frédéric Dupré (3rd place World Cup, Best Craftsman of France), Duc Thuan Bui (winner of the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show), and Mike Boerma (winner of Flower Cup 2025 and 2nd place Dutch Floral Art Championship).
Although some classes are taught by different instructors, they are always coordinated with floral design mentor Mike Boerma, providing a consistent guiding figure who keeps your personal development at the centre of the programme.
Wide range of botanical and technical materials
The Boerma Instituut is located in the heart of the flower industry, ensuring that the best materials are always available.
We also collaborate with exceptional growers such as Marginpar, Morning Glory, and Ayoba.
Floral Design Supplies provides materials together with Smithers-Oasis and H&R the Wireman.
Easy to reach and plenty of accommodation nearby
The school is located just 20 minutes from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, and there is a wide range of accommodation options for every budget.

The IMF examination
The program culminates in an extensive practical and theoretical examination.
Before the exam, students receive two preparation days at the school so that everyone can start the examination under equal conditions.
During the practical examination, students complete four different design assignments, which are assessed for both technical skill and creativity.
There are six hours in total to complete all four assignments.
The jury consists of four Master Florists, one of whom has not taught the group in order to ensure impartiality.
Homework assignments (assignment books) and botanical knowledge are also included in the final assessment. After successful completion, you will receive the official International Master Florist Diploma.
Admission requirements
Because the IMF programme represents the highest educational level within the Boerma Institute, admission requirements apply.
Participants must have at least:
- A completed DFD program and ADFD program, or an equivalent level from another recognised floral education program.
In addition, each candidate is asked to submit a portfolio and curriculum vitae in advance.

Attending the International Master Florist Certification program at the Boerma Instituut, in Aalsmeer, Netherlands, was a transformative milestone in my professional journey as a floral designer. Under the instruction of German Master Florist Gregor Lersch, I was immersed in an intensive curriculum that expanded both my technical skills and creative perspective. The program challenged me to think more intentionally about design through principles such as formlinear composition, the Golden Rule, vegetative design, displacement, and the relationship of contrast. I also gained hands-on experience with bouquet frames, plant design, bridging and scaling, large room installations, and the importance of precise nomenclature and sketching as foundational tools for planning and execution.
Throughout the course, I explored new techniques that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and encouraged innovation. I developed a deeper appreciation for structure and storytelling within floral design, learning how to balance artistic expression with technical precision. Each project
reinforced the importance of mechanics, proportion, and harmony, while also allowing space for personal interpretation and creativity.
The final examination consisted of five components: botanical identification, a bridal bouquet, a freestanding hand-tied bouquet, a buffet piece, and a displacement design. I am proud to have graduated cum laude, meaning “with honors,” as my scores remained consistently above
average. I was especially honored that my work resonated with the judges.
My use of deconstructed Alpinia in a highly decorative application stood out, as did the well-defined and layered color palette in my displacement piece. My buffet design demonstrated strong use of repetition and was constructed entirely from scratch, while my bouquet frame featured elongated feet and incorporated wool alongside botanical elements, showcasing both texture and structural creativity.
My experience at Boerma Institute profoundly elevated my design style and reignited my passion for flowers. It refined my approach to floral artistry and strengthened my confidence in both conceptualizing and executing complex designs. I am deeply grateful to the American Floral
Endowment for providing the scholarship that made this opportunity possible. Their support has enabled me not only to achieve this personal goal but also to give back to the floral community by sharing the knowledge and techniques I have gained. I am committed to helping others grow in their craft, especially those who may not have the opportunity to travel, ensuring that this education continues to inspire and uplift the industry.
Respectfully submitted,
Christina Ignatius AIFD EMC IMF PFCI AzMF

Thank you Mike, your guidance and commitment to nurturing talent within the floral industry are evident in every detail of the IMF masterclass. Your ability to teach with such clarity and enthusiasm made the experience both educational and enjoyable.
And also thanks to the Boerma Instituut team for organizing this exceptional event. I highly appreciate your efforts in bringing together such talented professionals, creating an enriching environment and providing nice facilities. This masterclass has undoubtedly been a transformative experience for all involved, and I am truly grateful to have been a part of it.
I had the privilege of attending the MF course with Gregor at the Boerma Institute and it has been the most wonderful learning experience for me. The teaching was exceptional, led by a world-class master who brought unparalleled expertise and passion to the classroom. The curriculum and course content were also outstanding, providing a comprehensive and engaging exploration of the subject matter.
Overall, I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking for a transformative learning experience. The combination of excellent teaching, rigorous curriculum, and exceptional support provided by Boerma made it an unforgettable journey that I will always treasure
My experience with the International Master Florist certification has been the most immersive and richly layered education of my career—an environment steeped in history, technique, and advanced theory that defies simple description. Gregor Lersch, a true treasure in our industry, infuses each day with a unique blend of humility and infectious passion that radiates from both his teaching and his work. Mornings began with Gregor unveiling inspired designs, sparking meaningful dialogue, and afternoons transitioned into intensely hands-on creative sessions, closing with thoughtful group critiques that deepened our collective understanding.
What sets the IMF experience apart is not only the world-class instruction but also the camaraderie and wisdom shared among fellow master-level designers hailing from across the globe. There was no space for ego—only shared reverence for floristry and a hunger for knowledge, creating a space where the best truly elevated one another. To be counted among the IMF graduates feels like the highest honor, a testament to the profound impact these individuals have on our art form.
The program itself, crafted with the meticulous care and vision of the Boerma family, leaves nothing to chance—every detail, from curriculum to daily rituals, is intentional. Even the meals reflect their dedication: fresh, organic, and nourishing, sustaining both body and soul throughout the journey. I cannot speak more highly of the International Master Florist program—it is a transformative chapter for any designer seeking depth, connection, and excellence within our botanical community.
All the courses from DFD, ADFD and IMF are so worthy of improving your creativity and floristry. They approach you to be the next level. They give you a different task every day and you can learn small details by theory lesson. Warm atmosphere all the time, and they are so friendly! Hope you don’t miss this amazing opportunity!!
