International Professional Dutch Floral Design Course
The International Professional Dutch Floral Design Course at the Boerma Instituut is the perfect starting point for anyone aspiring to a professional career in the floral industry. Taught in English, this program provides a solid foundation for both beginners and experienced florists, shop assistants, and hobbyists who want to elevate their skills.
With the unique approach of Dutch Floral Design (DFD), you will not only learn practical skills but also gain an in-depth theoretical background essential for creating high-quality floral designs. No experience? No problem. This course is designed to teach you step-by-step all the techniques, from simple bouquets to advanced funeral arrangements and bridal work.
What will you learn during the course?
The course is divided into a theoretical and a practical part:
Theory:
- Material knowledge: Discover the properties and uses of flowers and cut foliage.
- Color theory: Learn how to combine colors for aesthetic and harmonious designs.
- Design schemes: Understand the key styles and principles of floral design.
Practical:
During the practical part, the focus is on technical skills. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you will learn how to create:
- Hand-tied bouquets: mixed, parallel, open silhouettes, and bridal bouquets.
- Corsages: men’s and women’s corsages and tiaras.
- Funeral arrangements: teardrop designs, crosses, wreaths, and linear arrangements.
- General floral work: Dutch garden designs, vegetative designs, Biedermeiers, and much more.
Flexible Modules
The International Floral Design Vocational Training can be taken as a full four-week course or divided into modules. This allows you to tailor the course to fit your schedule. Each module focuses on a specific aspect of floral design, and you can either take the entire course in one go or spread the modules over multiple periods.

A special part of the course is an excursion to the Royal FloraHolland flower auction in Aalsmeer. Here, you will see how millions of flowers are shipped around the world every day.

A Heartfelt Thank You to the School and the Entire Team
My floral training took place from September 7 to October 2, 2026. Although it was quite a long period, the time flew by incredibly quickly, and I learned so much more than I had ever expected.
I learned not only advanced floral techniques but also the importance of the simplest details — how to hold my hand correctly when arranging a bouquet, how to combine colours harmoniously, and how to work with different flowers and materials to create beautiful, balanced compositions. These essential details have given me a deeper understanding of the art of floristry and have helped me grow both professionally and creatively.
Throughout the course, we had the opportunity to work with an amazing variety of fresh flowers, and every training day brought new knowledge, inspiration, and challenges. The quality of teaching was truly outstanding, with highly professional and talented teachers, each bringing their own experience, knowledge, and artistic vision.
I would also like to thank the school for the wonderful organisation and for taking such thoughtful care of us. Even the delicious lunch provided every training day became a lovely part of the experience.
When I returned home, the learning experience stayed with me so deeply that, for an entire week, I kept dreaming about creating my incredible bouquets and applying all the techniques correctly! That is how much this course inspired me and how deeply it became part of me.
I am sincerely grateful to the school, all the teachers, and every member of the team who contributed to our training and made the entire experience so special. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your passion, your creativity, and your love for flowers.

My experience at the Boerma Instituut was incredible. The in-depth floristry training provided me with strong technical skills to build off of. The program is thoughtfully structured. Jaquline, Mike and Syl were fantastic, patient instructors who are genuinely invested in their student’s growth. Beyond the classroom, the lunches they provide are not only delicious, but healthy. The store Axel runs within the school is so helpful and provides you with anything to get you through homework and beyond. I walked away with so much more knowledge of the floral industry to start my new career path. And just as important, the bonds I formed during my time there are ones I will always cherish.
