Are you passionate about floral design and dreaming of a professional career as a florist or owning your flower shop? This course provides all the knowledge and expertise you need to confidently start your career in the floral industry.
What Is the Floral Design Professional Course?
Our DFD course is a comprehensive program designed to teach floral design in a professional and practical manner. It’s perfect for anyone looking to open their own flower shop, work as a qualified florist, or elevate their hobby to the next level by mastering various floral design techniques.
Unique to the Boerma Instituut, the Dutch Floral Design (DFD) program offers an exclusive opportunity to learn the art of Dutch floral design, renowned worldwide for its innovation and quality.
Practice-Focused Training
This course emphasizes hands-on experience. Over 20 training days, including one exam day, you’ll learn essential floral design techniques and create a wide variety of floral arrangements.
Classes run from 10:00 to 15:45, with occasional extensions depending on the depth of the lesson and class discussions. The focus is on practical skills applicable to real-world florist work.
Floral Techniques You’ll Learn:
- Hand-Tied Bouquets: Mixed, grouped, linear, mille fleurs, and “wildflower” bouquets.
- Bridal Bouquets: Biedermeier, teardrop, linear, and pomander styles.
- Funeral Arrangements: Teardrop-shaped, linear, and cross-shaped tributes.
- Corsages: Ladies’, men’s, and hat corsages.
- General Floral Work: Vase arrangements, wreaths, and table decorations.
The DFD Diploma – Certified Florist
After successfully completing the course, you’ll receive the Dutch Floral Design (DFD) diploma. This internationally recognized certification qualifies you to work as a florist and serves as a prestigious testament to your skills in the floral industry.
From 1926 to 1996, the Dutch florist profession required a specific florist-shopkeeper license to open a flower shop. Today, the DFD diploma has taken its place, accredited by the Boerma Instituut.

These theoretical aspects are supported by a textbook and additional resources, such as supplier product guides and a field trip to the FloraHolland flower auction.
